This section of the route certainly has moments that get you thinking about how things were or, if you are lucky enough, how things would have been before you were born! A visit to the Blue Whale Swimming Hole will no doubt inspire thoughts of how the site would have been at the time a father built the enormous blue whale as a treat for his kids. Or there is the Ribbon Road section of Route 66. A 9 foot wide stretch of road has led to urban legend as to why its width is so slight. One states that funds were tight so engineers had to choose between building the road the full length but half the width or the full width but half the length, legend states that they chose the latter. The exact reason for its odd size is unclear but it makes for an interesting story.
Also be sure to pay a visit to the Hole In The Wall gas station in Commerce. This gas station is pretty much what it says but it screams Route 66 charm. Be sure not to miss it! Don’t forget to stop in Erick. Find the shop covered in Advertising signs and stop off inside. You will never forget it.
